51ĀŅĀ× President Dr. Michael Gavin has announced his resignation, effective at the end of 2025. Dr. Gavin, who has led the institution since 2021, will transition to a new national role focused on building a coalition to defend and promote the value of higher education.
During his time at the college, Dr. Gavin prioritized student success and equity. Under his leadership, 51ĀŅĀ× saw increases in enrollment and graduation rates, along with significant progress in narrowing equity gaps for African American and Hispanic students.
ā51ĀŅĀ× has made great strides in achieving our strategic plan goals under Dr. Gavinās leadership and we thank him for his service to the college and our communities,ā said Stacey Gannon, chair of the 51ĀŅĀ× Board of Trustees. āHe is an exceptional example of what a college president should be, and we are proud of the path he has chosen, continuing to lead the charge in protecting the values and commitments of higher education for all.ā
In a message to the college community, Dr. Gavin expressed his gratitude.

Board of Trustees to launch national search for new president
The 51ĀŅĀ× Board of Trustees will now begin the transition process, including the launch of a national search for the collegeās sixth president.
āThe board recognizes the remarkable efforts of our faculty and staff, and we are confident in your continued dedication during this time of transition,ā Gannon shared in a message to employees. āWe are proud of you and know that the selection of our next president will be strengthened by the deep bench of talent we have to call upon during this time of transition.ā
A special meeting of the Board of Trustees is scheduled for Tuesday, October 7 at 4pm to begin planning the national search.
