51ĀŅĀ× held its 64th Commencement Ceremony Friday, April 25 in Pioneer Gym. Graduates and their loved ones gathered on the main campus for a day of celebration.
As Dr. Michael Gavin, president of 51ĀŅĀ×, addressed the sea of green, he shared insights on the importance of support and community. āI donāt need to convince all of you, but I hear from students, time and time again, that Delta is about community,ā says Dr. Gavin. āItās about real support. We truly want to see you succeed. Not just inside the classroom, but in all aspects of life. I hope you found the support you needed throughout your time here at Delta and that you feel prepared for the next chapter.ā
We also heard from two student speakers, Natalie Sika and Ericka Newman, who shared their personal stories of success and well wishes for their peers.
Both graduates reflected on the sentiment that you can do anything you set your mind to. Natalie shared how a shift in perspective helps her overcome challenges. āDuring my journey of life, I have overcome many different types of obstacles and setbacks,ā said Natalie. āThrough facing those battles, I have learned to change my mindset and use those stopping blocks as learning opportunities.ā
Ericka admitted that her first two tries at college didnāt go to plan. But for her, the third time was the charm. āThe Downtown Saginaw Center was my saving grace,ā admits Ericka. āHaving a location so close to home made my college experience significantly easier. I felt like I was more than just another student. I mattered.ā
